Techneck – What is it and What can be done to Prevent or Treat it

As most of the general public is now aware we have yet another new term going viral called the “techneck”. The experts claim this is caused by the use of smartphones and any other portable device that positions our necks looking downward that is causing premature wrinkles in our necks.
Dr. Oz released an article on this subject in his Dr. Oz “The Good Life Magazine”. The article explains how people typically apply sunscreen to faces and bodies but often overlook the neck. The skin on a neck is thinner and more sensitive as it has less oil glands causing sagging and lines. When you add constant use of smart phones increases the likelihood of wrinkling even with young adults.

The constant hunching over to read smart phones can also cause back pain. The human body is not designed to be in the same position for extended periods of time.

Here are some preventative tips:
  1. Become self-aware of your body position while using your smart phone. Try to keep your chin up!
  2. Never use your smartphone for extended periods of time.
  3. Use sunscreen on your neck, face and body when outside.
  4. Use moisturizers.
  5. Use anti-aging creams.

Techneck Treatment

For some patients that are in their 40’s and up prevention is great; however, in many cases the damage is already done. These patients typically desire a more permanent treatment to reduce neck wrinkles. While surgical options such as neck lifts may be appropriate in the truly sagging neck, radiofrequency and ultrasound therapies are the mainstay of treatment for those that are looking to improve the neck without surgical intervention.

Gravity Med Spa uses EndyMed 3DEEP RF treatments to treat “techneck” along with a number of other skin conditions and to achieve facial and body tightening. EndyMed 3DEEP stimulates your body’s natural collagen renewal process leading to skin tightening and a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles.
