How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal utilizes concentrated beams of light (laser) to remove unwanted hair. When set to the appropriate wavelength, the laser penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) located in the hair follicles. This heats the follicles, damaging the hair shaft and bulb while leaving the surrounding tissues unharmed. Hair regrowth in the damaged follicles is significantly reduced, and permanent hair reduction may be achieved over time.

What Areas Of The Body Can Laser Hair Removal Treat?

Laser hair removal can safely and effectively reduce hair growth on many areas of the body, including:

  • Underarms
  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Between eyebrows
  • Upper lip
  • Chin
  • Bikini area
  • Stomach
  • Back
  • Shoulders
  • Buttocks
  • Chest
  • Neck

How Is Laser Hair Removal Different From Other Techniques?

At-home hair removal methods such as shaving and depilatory creams are accessible, inexpensive and effective in the short-term, but require considerable upkeep to maintain smoothness. Spa options, including waxing and threading, deliver longer-lasting results but the cost of regular treatments quickly adds up. Many of these methods cause irritation and discomfort for individuals with sensitive skin. Laser hair removal’s precise, concentrated beams can achieve shorter treatment times and quick results.

How Should I Prepare for My Laser Hair Removal Appointment?

Laser hair removal requires some preparation in the lead up to your session. Do not tan (outdoors or indoors) or use self-tanning products for at least four weeks before your appointment. Your skin should be as light as possible at the time of treatment to maximize the effectiveness of the laser. During the same period, refrain from tweezing, waxing, bleaching, threading, electrolysis or any other treatment that might irritate your skin and make it difficult for the laser to identify the hair follicle. Shaving is acceptable during this time. Shave the area that will be treated 24-48 hours prior to your session. Leave the area free of cosmetics, lotions, creams, oils, and deodorant on the day of treatment.

What Happens During a Laser Hair Removal Session?

Laser hair removal sessions typically last 10 to 60 minutes depending on the size and number of areas being treated. During the appointment, the laser device will be calibrated based on your skin tone as well as the color, thickness and location of the hair being treated. The treatment area will be cleansed and you will be given protective eyewear. When the preparations are complete, your specialist will press the handpiece of the device against your skin while it emits pulses of light. A cooling device or a cooling topical gel may be used to protect your skin during treatment.

Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?

Laser hair removal destroys hair follicles with minimal discomfort. Many clients compare the sensation of the laser’s pulse to the snap of a rubber band against their skin. Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, but laser hair removal is tolerated well by most people and we endeavor to make the experience as comfortable as possible. Should you require topical anesthetic, home numbing or in office anesthetic creams are available for purchase.

Is Downtime Needed After Laser Hair Removal?

No downtime is necessary after your laser hair removal appointment. Though you may experience some redness and swelling in the treated area, clients can usually resume normal activities right away. These side effects are generally mild and resolve within a few days. Follow your specialist’s instructions for post-treatment care, including avoiding sun exposure and tanning, certain hair removal methods and any medications or skin care products that could cause irritation.

What Results Can I Expect From Laser Hair Removal?

Hair does not fall out immediately following a laser treatment; your body will shed the treated hairs over the course of the next few weeks after your appointment. Repeated treatments are usually necessary because hair production naturally occurs in a cycle and laser hair removal is most effective when follicles are in the new-growth stage. After completing a course of treatments, clients can remain hair-free for months or even years. If regrowth occurs, the hair is often finer, lighter in color and less noticeable. Touch-ups may be required to address new hair growth that appears over time.

How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments will I Need?

The number of appointments required to achieve optimal results depends on multiple factors, including your skin type, hair density and natural hair growth cycle. We typically recommend clients undergo a series of 6 treatments every four to six weeks for best results. Fewer hairs will return with each successive treatment.

Who Is a Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is an option for many patients who suffer from razor bumps, rashes, cuts, itching and ingrown hairs caused by shaving or waxing, or who want a long-lasting hair removal solution that requires minimal upkeep. Individuals with fair skin and dark hair are generally the best candidates for laser hair removal. The treatment may be less suitable for patients with darker skin tones and patients with blonde, grey, or white hair. Our specialist will evaluate your hair color, skin type and skin sensitivity to determine whether laser hair removal is right for you.
