Laser hair removal is considered a far more effective solution for unwanted hair with long lasting results, and has gained in popularity since first introduced in the late 1990s. In its 2012 procedural survey, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery listed laser hair removal as the 3rd most popular minimally invasive aesthetic procedure, following just behind Botox and Hyaluronic Acid (eg Juvederm, Voluma) in popularity.

After a consultation with one of our staff members, we will determine the treatment program that is right for you. Depending on the body area or areas treated, you’ll typically receive a series of treatments spaced apart every four to eight weeks. Often times, we are able to offer you the initial treatment session on the very same day as your consultation.

Commonly Asked Questions

How does laser hair removal work?

The laser produces a large beam of highly concentrated light. The light emitted is well absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicles (melanin). During the hair removal procedure, the laser pulses for a fraction of a second, allowing the hair to absorb the light and heat up. As the hair follicle heats up, the hair shaft and bulb are damaged. This significantly reduces the hair’s ability to re-grow, and results in permanent hair reduction over time. With each session, the number of hairs growing in the treatment area declines and they can become finer and lighter.

What is the typical procedure length? Can I do it during my lunch hour?

A single session of laser hair removal can be performed on any area of the face or body in as little as 15 to 30 minutes.  If your have 15-30 minutes to spare during your lunch hour you can definitely have your treatment performed at that time. Since there is no downtime, you can return back to work and your daily activities right away.

Is laser hair removal right for me?

Laser hair removal is appropriate for both women and men. Candidates for the procedure are those that have unwanted facial or body hair that makes them feel self-conscious. Although patients with dark hair and light skin are best suited for the procedure as darker hairs absorb more of the laser light and light skin allows more transmission into the hair follicle, patients of all skin types can achieve lasting results with laser hair removal. Unfortunately, patients with blonde hair or gray hair typically do not notice significant improvement.

What does laser hair removal feel like? Is it painful?

Patients describe the sensation of laser hair removal as similar to the snap of a rubber band. Although the procedure is not typically described as being very painful, we are sensitive to the needs of each of our patients and want to make your experience as pleasant as possible. Should you require topical anesthetic, this can be arranged for you without any additional cost to you. Please plan to allow for more time for your treatment session as it typically takes 30 minutes prior to the topical agent having its full effect.

How many treatments does it take to achieve permanent results?

Depending on the density of hair, hair color and hormonal factors, the number of treatments required varies from three to eight, spaced four to eight weeks apart.

What are the possible side effects?

Although permanent complications are quite rare from laser hair removal, there are some common complications that need to be mentioned:

  • Skin blistering
  • Changes in skin color (hypo/hyper pigmentation)
  • Increased hair growth
  • Eye injury when using a laser around the eyes
  • Need for further procedures to achieve satisfactory results
How will I care for my treated area after the procedure?

After the procedure, patients do complain of some mild reddish discoloration of the skin in the treated area. This typically resolves in a matter of minutes to hours and can be hastened with the application of ice. Sun avoidance and use of sunscreen in exposed treated areas is a must afterwards. After the procedure, you may notice an increase in hair growth in the treated area as dormant hair follicles come to maturity. We will ask you to return for your follow up visit within 4-8 weeks depending on the areas being treated. It typically requires 3-8 sessions to achieve permanent hair loss in a treated area.
